It is unclear when man first made glass. However, according
to the ancient Roman historian Pliny (AD 23-79), Phoenician merchants carrying
nitrate accidentally discovered glass 6000 years ago. Pliny described how the
sailors were anchored and camped on the Eastern Mediterranean coast of what is
now Syria ready to prepare a meal to eat. The cooking pots were rested on blocks
of nitrate by the fire. The nitrate melted and mixed with the sand creating a
liquid. As the liquid cooled it became translucent, durable and impermeable.
This is the first noted record of the creation of man-made glass.
Around
the end of the 1 st Century BC glassblowing was discovered along the Eastern
Mediterranean coast, which is now Syria . This invention revolutionized glass
production allowing it to be produced easier & faster. As a result, glass became
available to the common people for the first time. Molten glass was placed at
the end of a hollow tube; by blowing through the tube the glassblower could
quickly produce shapes at the end of the rod. The molten glass could also be
blown into a mould and shaped freehand to any form desired with handles and
other decorative features.
In the Arab World glass blowing is an ancient and traditional
art form, a talent and skill handed down from generation to generation. In Syria
today there are only 2 skilled hand blown-glass factories left - both can be
found in Damascus . 24arabia.com prides itself on importing the best
